Water Towers
Bernd and Hilla Becher
Starting in 1957, Bernd and Hilla Becher travelled throughout Europe and North America taking black-and-white photographs of industrial architecture during a time when few people were interested in such structures.
They organized their photographs into series based exclusively on functional typologies and arranged them into grids or rows, revealing the diverse structural and material variations found within specific kinds of edifices. One of the series included water towers, constructed of similar materials but differing vastly in form.
